Sunday, March 12, 2006 (Johannesburg):
South Africa have won the greatest one-day international game in the history of cricket by defeating Australia.
Chasing an almost impossible 435 for victory, also the highest-ever score in a one-day match, the hosts won by one wicket in the fifth and final one-day international in Johannesburg.
Earlier, Australia set a new world record by scoring the highest score in a one-day international, only to be broken by South Africa.
Led by captain Ricky Ponting, the Aussies scored 434 in their allotted 50 overs against South Africa with the loss of just four wickets.
Ponting also top scored with 164 off 105 balls, while Mike Hussey scored 80. Simon Katich scored 79 while Adam Gilchrist made 55.
For South Africa, Herschelles Gibbs top scored with his scintillating 175 off just 111 balls.
Both Gibbs and Ponting have been jointly awarded the Man of the Match.
