Although salaries are bigger, and shares of merchandising have become more and more of a standard, much of a wrestler’s income is determined by how often he wrestles. This is one major reason why pro wrestlers feel that they have to keep competing, even when they’re injured. They also end up using all sorts of drugs to numb their pain and heal faster.

There is actually no surprise in the theory that Chris Benoit killed his wife and son and committed suicide because of a condition called "‘roid rage", which is a form of paranoia caused by repeated steroid use. And even though the drugs found in the Benoit home in Atlanta were synthetic testosterone which could lead to psychosis and anti-social behavior and depression, the WWE is still saying that the public shouldn’t jump to conclusions.

"There’s no way, quite frankly, that we, or the media – it’s all speculation until the toxicology reports come back," World Wrestling Entertainment owner Vince McMahon said. "It’s all speculation."

Although the WWE’s website has long written rules on many matters regarding promotions, employment and so on, it only has one paragraph dedicated to its policy on drug use.

"It is WWE’s desire to provide a drug-free, healthy and safe workplace. While on WWE premises and while conducting business-related activities off premises, no employee may use, possess, distribute, sell or be under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol (unless the use of alcohol is appropriate for the situation, such as in the case of a business dinner or cocktail party, in which case alcohol may be used only in moderation). The legal use of prescribed drugs is permitted on the job if it does not impair an employee’s ability to perform the essential functions of the job and in a safe manner that does not endanger other individuals in the workplace."

That’s it, aside from one line in the section for employees conduct. ("Working under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs or possessing/engaging in the sale, distribution, or transportation of illegal drugs.")

Dr. Gary Wadler of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has found two loopholes in the WWE’s rules on steroid use. A wrestler can supposedly pass the doping test with a testosterone to epitestosterone ratio of 10:1, more than double the WADA standard. Under WADA rules, athletes are in violation starting at 4:1; the average ratio is 1:1. This means that under regular circumstances, wrestlers already have a disallowed volume of steroids in them. And a wrestler who tests positive can be excused by the WWE if he has a doctor’s prescription and a medical reason for taking that particular drug.

"Somebody says you need to put 25 pounds on your upper body," said Larry DeGaris, a sports marketing professor at the University of Indianapolis who wrestles as "The Professor" Larry Brisco on the independent circuit. "You know there’s only one way to do that. Nobody needs to tell you. It’s just a tacit understanding."

Legislation is constantly being proposed, but nothing has happened. And the culture of drug and steroid and even alcholo abuse has already claimed many victims, and a whole bunch of them just in the last couple of years. Last weekend, when the bodies of Benoit and family were discovered, his old tag-team partner Biff Wellington (whose real name is Shayne Bower) was found in his bed. He was 42. A couple of weeks ago, former women’s champion "Sensational" Sherri Martel passed away in Alabama at the age of 49. Last year, Benoit’s wrestling buddy, Mike Durham, died of complications from sleep apnea, which is more common in larger, heavier athletes. It was about this time that Benoit’s behavior started to change.

Joe Laurinaitis, the wrestler known as Road Warrior Animal and father of Ohio State football star James Laurinaitis, saw the deterioration of his childhood friend and partner, Road Warrior Hawk (Michael Hegstrand), who died from a heart attack in 2003. Just 46, Hegstrand battled alcohol, drugs and steroids.

"I used to watch him sometimes and just shake my head. I would think, ‘Oh my God, what in the world is he doing? Why is he doing that?’" Laurinaitis said. "I saw quite a few guys go down that path."

All died before their 50th birthdays. All of this death, because there is no firm regulation on what they can use to recover faster from injury, and bulk up faster.

And that is why Chris Benoit will not be the last on pro wrestling’s obituary.
