I just have to say this before going back to the topic,
Gif is only used for animation. Which makes your pictures kinda different.
Trust me and use JPEG it;s the best. =D
PNG I think is second best but JPEG is the best. =D
okay now back to the topic.

let me clarify something first. BMP saves everything in raster (pixels). PNG saves raster and vector together (that means the vector will not turn to raster even though there are raster elements in the image) and JPEG has something to do with compression of photographic images.
And if I sound confusing ........ here's something about vector vs. raster
