Zahrah, I was living right in the middle of the Jakarta city in ShangriLa Hotel. The place my dad brought me was very close to where the hotel is. They are living in the city slums. I didn't realize how different our lives were until my dad asked me to look down the 25th floor of the club we belong to. Some people were bathing and washing in the dirty muddy big drainage! It was an eye opener for me.
I don't remember when exactly when my parents showed me city clums in Old Klang Road. The roofs were all made out of aluminium. It must be baking to be under that roof on midday.
Chris, Singapore is small and new. For us European we were kind of sad when the government tore down Bugis Street, Satay Club,...all the old historical places and built new ones on top of them. For me I am educated to identify with heritage and to treasure them.
The old Parliament House has been converted to an Arts House, so at least that was preserved.the Old Satay Club is still here but at Sembawang Shopping Centre. Maybe we could go there some day and have all the yummy satay =D _________________
