Front and center in bold print on the front page of the Dec. 6, 1905 Rushville Republican was the following invitation from the North Pole, dated “Dec. 2d, 1905:”
From Santa Claus to the little folks. My Dear Children: Write me what you want for Christmas and address your letter to “Santa Claus” care of the Daily Republican. For the past year I have received my mail at the Republican office and have never disappointed you. There may be some sub-stations opened in other parts of the city, but the big post office will remain at the Republican office, where my mail has always been carefully looked after, and from where I can best supply your wants. Ever Your Loving Friend, Santa Claus.
The letters began pouring in. Here is just a small sample of them. Perhaps you’ll recognize the names of your parents, grandparents or great grandparents.
n Dear Santa Claus: I red what the other boys rote and will tell you what I want. I want a little solger suit and gun and sorde. I like to play solger. Maybe sometime I can get a penshon. I live on sexton street. Your little friend, Johnie Glass.
n Dear Santa Claus: I thought I would write you a letter and tell you what I want. I want a doll and cab and furs and ring and pocket book and story book and gloves and oranges and bananas and candy and nuts. I am eight years old and a set of furs. Good by, Anna Glaska.
n Dear Santa: I want a Toilet Set, a good Story Book for me and I want a shaving mug for my dear papa. I am 11 years old. Yours truly, Eva Noble.
n Dear Santa Claus: I am a little girl 9 years old. I wont some candy nuts a doll and a box of hairpins. I wish you would bring mama something for I hant got eny mony to get her a pesent with. Good by, Stella Ramer.
n Dear Santa Claus: I thought I would write and tell you what I want for Christmas. I want a doll, gocart, doll rocker chair, new shoes, stove, washing outfit, candy bananas, oranges, new jacket, and Santa, please do not forget me. Yours, Gertrude O’Reilly.
n Dear Santa Claus: How are you? I want a doll and doll cab for Christmas and a new dress and a pair of furs and a little house and stove, furniture and nuts and candy and oranges and bananas. I am 9 years old. Please don’t forget my little sister Coleta and Marie. Beatrice Mack, Harrison street.
n Dear Santa Clause: Bring me a bed for my doll baby and a monkey that can climb a string and some candy and some nuts. Vernette Black 120 E. 5th St. Rushville, Ind.
n Dear Santa Clause: Please bring me a big doll and a trunk and a little rocking chair and anything you wish to bring me. I am 8 years old. Fern Finley 215 E. eight st.
n Dear Santa: I am three years old. I went to your store at Mauzy Co. yesterday and left 65 cents there that I have saved and won’t you please bring me one of those fire engines I saw there? And little sister a doll? You will find us at Grandpa’s at Connersville. Carl Kassen, Glenwood.
n Dear Santa Claus: I thought I would write and tell you what I wanted for Christmas. I would like to have a big doll, a pair of mittens, a ring and some candy, some bananas, and some mixed nuts. Do not forget my little brother Laurence, his wants a horn and some candy. He is 3 and a half years old I am 9 years old. Your Friend, Leona Brooks.
n Dear Santa Clause: I want for Christmas a new brown wousted dress a fancy handkerchief a pair of brown side combs and some kind of a book to read candy oranges and nuts. I am eleven years old. I live in west Arlington. Your new friend, Ruth Williamson, Please do not forget me.
n Dear Santa: I have been a good boy and I want an engine with a coal car and a toll chest and a pencil box and that is all for this year. I will leave the front door unlocked as the grate is too little for you. I am your friend, Paul E. Davison.
